The Gold Church is made up of photos taken at The Basilica San Paolo Fuori le Mura in Rome. The building has a gold-leafed exterior wall that shines brightly in the sun. The windows — a gift from the king of Egypt after a fire in the church in 1823 — are made of alabaster. From the inside, they glow in gold and yellow tones.
“Chiral Fret Typeface” was created for this book. It forms the letters using units of the classic meander fret ornament as building blocks on a 4 x 3 grid, with rotation at the top and bottom center units. This fretwork is ubiquitous in the basilica, in Rome, and the world over.
